The man charged in the Pittsburgh synagogue massacre still wants to plead guilty in exchange for a life sentence, his lawyer said Thursday.
Judy Clarke told a judge she hopes the case against Robert Bowers can be resolved without a trial. The 46-year-old truck driver wasn’t in court.
Authorities say Bowers killed 11 people and wounded seven at Tree of Life synagogue last October. It was the deadliest attack on Jews in US history. He has previously pleaded not guilty.

Prime Minister Netanyahu directed the Foreign Ministry to reach out to nearby countries for “immediate” assistance in putting out the hundreds of fires that were ravaging the country Thursday evening, destroying dozens of houses and forcing the evacuation of some 3,500 from their homes.
Later, the Foreign Ministry said Italy, Greece, Cyprus and Croatia had agreed to send help, but the aircraft would only be able to depart for Israel on Friday morning.
Hours earlier, Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan held a situational assessment and instructed fire authorities to prepare for the possibility that a national emergency be declared, with Friday’s temperatures expected to eclipse 100° F throughout the country.

An Argentinian rabbi returning from prayer services on Saturday evening was physically attacked by a group of individuals yelling racial slurs against Jews, according to a report in The Jerusalem Post.
Rabbi Elyahu Shaman, who serves as a cantor at a Buenos Aires synagogue, was wounded in the face and hand. Witnesses to the assault stood by and laughed, according to a statement given to the Post.
The incident comes a month after two Jewish worshippers were attacked outside the Mikdash Yosef Jewish center in Buenos Aires.

Thousands of Israelis have been evacuated from their homes and at least sixteen houses destroyed Thursday as fires rage out of control in central and southern Israel.
Homes have been reported as destroyed in both Kibbutz Harel and Mevo Modim, which sits near the Ben Shemen forest and just off of Route 443.
Residents from Harel, Mevo Modim, and a number of towns near Mevo Modim – including Gimzu, Kfar Daniel, and even Shilat – have been evacuated in part or entirely. Current estimates put the number of evacuated residents at about 3,500.
Officials say the Ben Shemen forest, a major nature preserve near the densely-populated coastal region, suffered “massive damage” in the fire.

Sephardic Chief Rabbi Yitzchak Yosef revealed that a rabbinate council member urged the removal of a sign that warns people against entering Har Habayis, wanting to replace it with one saying that entering the holy site is subject to halachic dispute.
“A sharp argument broke out and I explained to him that we respect every talmid chochom, but must remember: Who forbade entering? All the gedolei hadoros, all chief rabbis of their times from Rav Avrohom Yitzchok Hakohen Kook onwards … strictly forbade this,” Rav Yosef said.

Half of all Americans believe that the United States will go to war with Iran “within the next few years,” according to a Reuters/Ipsos public opinion poll released on Tuesday amid increased tensions between the two countries.
While Americans are more concerned about Iran as a security threat to the United States now than they were last year, few would be in favor of a pre-emptive attack on the Iranian military. But if Iran attacked US military forces first, four out of five believed the United States should respond militarily in a full or limited way, the May 17-20 poll showed.

It has been revealed that, a decade and a half ago, Jeremy Corbyn, now the controversial far-left leader of the UK Labour party, defended a speech by then-Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in which he called for Israel’s annihilation.
According to the London-based Campaign Against Antisemitism, which cited the work of investigative journalist Iggy Ostanin, the Ahmadinejad speech took place in 2005 at an event titled, “The world without Zionism.” In the speech, Ahmadinejad vowed to “wipe Israel off the map.”

The United States and Israel on Wednesday called for UNRWA, the U.N. agency that oversees the Palestinian refugees, to cease operations.
“We need an additional $1.2 billion for our activities in 2019. We don’t believe the future of Palestine refugees should be framed in decades of UNRWA,” said Pierre Krähenbühl, the UNRWA representative, at a U.N. Security Council special discussion about the agency. “They deserve a better political future. Until then, we will continue to operate.”
