An American official has pushed back against a report from the Washington Post, which cited an unnamed source claiming that the Trump administration had warned Israel it would lose U.S. backing if the fighting in Gaza continued.
While acknowledging that there may be areas of disagreement between the two allies, the official dismissed the core of the report outright. “The idea that we would abandon Israel is preposterous,” the official stated.
According to the Washington Post, the source described as being “familiar with the discussions” alleged that Trump’s advisers had delivered a stark message to Israeli officials, warning that the U.S. would “abandon” them unless the conflict came to a halt.
“Trump’s people are letting Israel know, ‘We will abandon you if you do not end this war,’” the source reportedly said. “Politically, as in the past, Netanyahu has a way to do that, with a huge majority in the Knesset and in Israel, but he does not have the political will.”
Currently, Prime Minister Netanyahu governs with a slim 67-seat bloc in the 120-member Knesset, and his coalition partners frequently threaten to walk away, putting his government on shaky footing.
