During a visit to Capitol Hill on Tuesday, President Donald Trump announced plans to launch an inquiry into Joe Biden’s reliance on an autopen for signing key documents while in office. Trump suggested that major policies, including those related to border security, may not have been directly approved by Biden himself.
“We’re going to start looking into this whole thing with who signed this legislation. Who signed legislation opening our border? I don’t think [Biden] knew. I said, ‘There’s nobody that can want an open border. Nobody,'” Trump said. “And now I find out that it wasn’t him. He autopenned it.”
Trump expressed alarm over the situation and demanded to know who was responsible for controlling the autopen device.
“This is a very serious thing,” Trump said. “We had a president that didn’t sign anything. He autopenned almost anything. He opened the borders of the United States of America.”
According to a report from the Washington Examiner, House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer, R-Ky., confirmed Friday that the committee has launched a probe into Biden’s use of the autopen, particularly surrounding his last-minute pardons issued at the end of his presidency. Comer stated the committee believes they have identified the staffer involved.
The issue has further enraged Trump, especially following Biden’s decision in January to grant early pardons to several close allies and family members, using the autopen in the final hours before leaving office. Among the recipients were relatives of Biden, members of then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s January 6 committee, Dr. Anthony Fauci, and Gen. Mark Milley.
Trump declared those pardons invalid. He said the documents signed by the machine were “void, vacant, and of no further force or effect.”
