According to a source familiar with internal discussions, President Trump became deeply frustrated with Iran’s unwillingness to hold meaningful talks. “Iran’s refusal to engage in serious negotiations with President Trump really pissed him off,” the source told The New York Post.
Diplomatic talks between Washington and Tehran had been scheduled to take place in Oman last week. However, those plans were abruptly derailed after Israel launched a series of preemptive strikes against Iranian targets, prompting the cancellation of the meeting.
Following the Israeli operation, Trump encouraged Iranian leadership to return to the negotiating table. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan reportedly attempted to facilitate renewed dialogue between the two sides, according to Axios.
President Trump expressed openness to sitting down with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian directly, or to sending an emissary on his behalf. However, the Iranian government was unable to secure input from Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei to move forward with the talks, the report said.
