Basem Naim, a senior figure within the Hamas terrorist group’s political bureau, stated Wednesday evening that, in anticipation of President Donald Trump’s upcoming trip to the Middle East, high-level negotiations are underway to potentially reach a limited deal. This proposed arrangement would involve the release of a number of Israeli hostages in return for restricted humanitarian aid deliveries into Gaza, though it would not include a commitment to cease hostilities.
In an interview with the media, Naim described the current efforts as taking place amid what he called “the crime of starvation and ongoing mass destruction,” while also referencing mounting threats of further “military aggression.”
He claimed that “the Israeli government is striving to achieve an imaginary victory in the Gaza Strip and to secure the return of the Israeli hostages held by Hamas.”
Naim insisted that “Hamas and other Palestinian terror organizations will not accept any agreement that does not include a clear commitment to a complete cessation of ‘aggression,’” asserting that “the will of the Palestinian people and the resistance will not be broken despite the siege and suffering.”
He further stated that “Hamas remains committed to agreeing to an arrangement that includes a clear vision for the post-war phase,” and cautioned that any efforts to force through partial deals would face rejection from the Palestinian Arab population.
