An unknown individual used artificial intelligence to mimic the voice of Secretary of State Marco Rubio in a series of deceptive communications, according to a report from the Washington Post. The AI-generated voice was used to make phone calls and send messages to multiple high-ranking figures.
The impersonation allegedly targeted a U.S. state governor, a member of Congress, and three foreign ministers from different countries. These contacts reportedly occurred in June and were carried out through the messaging app Signal, where the impersonators created an account under the name “Marco.Rubio@state.gov.”
Authorities say the fraudulent account enabled the perpetrators to reach out to these officials under false pretenses. In response, the State Department has committed to thoroughly investigating what happened and taking measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
The FBI has not yet issued a statement or provided any public response regarding the matter.
