French President Emmanuel Macron took aim at Israeli Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu on Tuesday, delivering harsh criticism during an interview with TF1.
Macron condemned Netanyahu’s approach to aid delivery in Gaza, labeling it “shameful,” and suggesting that European nations should weigh stronger punitive measures. “What he’s doing is shameful,” the French President declared.
“My job is to do everything I can to make it stop,” Macron continued, indicating that the European Union might reconsider its agreements with Israel in light of current developments.
These remarks add to a growing list of rebukes Macron has directed at Israel since the onset of the war in Gaza, which erupted after the brutal October 7, 2023, Hamas-led attack in southern Israel.
Macron has twice advocated for halting arms transfers to Israel in an effort to de-escalate hostilities with both Hamas and Hezbollah. He stated that “stopping the export of weapons” being used in the Gaza Strip and in Lebanon is the only viable route to curtail the fighting.
Just last week, Macron cautioned that Israel’s ongoing campaign in Gaza may be violating international humanitarian law.
Macron’s most recent statements come shortly after Josep Borrell, the European Union’s foreign policy chief, indicated that the EU is actively preparing to evaluate the future of its Association Agreement with Israel amid rising alarm over the situation in Gaza.
The agreement, a longstanding trade and political partnership formalized in 2000, is based on mutual “respect for human rights and democratic principles,” principles many EU leaders now say may be under threat.
