The dispute surrounding the drafting of yeshiva students is intensifying, as the chareidi factions in the Knesset have escalated their protest by continuing to abstain from all votes on Wednesday.
In a demonstration of their opposition, chareidi lawmakers also opted out of the preliminary readings of private legislation introduced by members of the ruling coalition.
A senior figure in United Torah Judaism confirmed on Wednesday morning that “the boycott will continue as long as no solution is found regarding the draft issue.” He went on to say, “We are facing a severe crisis of faith. Unilateral actions are being taken against the Torah world, and the government is doing nothing to stop it.”
Meanwhile, as the legislative boycott unfolded, Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara on Tuesday instructed that military draft notices must be distributed to all eligible chareidi individuals starting in July.
She clarified that “notices must be sent to all candidates included in the so-called ‘pool,’” which is believed to include tens of thousands of additional chareidi men. She pointed out that the court’s conditional ruling on enforcement of the draft law represents a “red flag.”
The matter was further examined in a recent session, which revealed that close to 19,000 call-up orders have already been dispatched to yeshiva students, with an estimated 5,000 more expected to be issued before the end of June.
