Doctors have recently identified a minor growth in Joe Biden’s prostate during a standard checkup, it was disclosed this week.
“In a routine physical exam a small nodule was found in the prostate which necessitated further evaluation,” a spokesperson told ABC News.
At this stage, there is still no definitive word on the potential severity or implications of the finding.
The New York Times reported that the 82-year-old’s representatives would not comment further on any treatment or ongoing medical procedures.
Health complications like this are not unusual for men in their eighties, such as Biden, who exited the presidency in January after becoming the oldest individual to serve as commander-in-chief.
Throughout his presidency, questions surrounding Biden’s age and fitness became increasingly prominent, ultimately contributing to his decision to step aside and support Vice President Kamala Harris’s candidacy instead.
The revelation about Biden’s health emerges at the same time as details from a new book co-written by CNN’s Jake Tapper surface, describing internal concerns within his administration about his diminishing physical capabilities—including private conversations about possibly using a wheelchair during a potential second term if he beat President Trump.
Despite growing public doubts over his stability—exacerbated by a series of stumbles and moments that suggested mental decline—Biden’s team and loved ones continuously rejected any suggestions that his health was failing.
Back in February 2024, while still in office and positioned to be the Democratic nominee, Biden underwent a scheduled physical at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. Following that visit, his physician, Dr. Kevin O’Connor, reported he was “fit to serve.”
Later, in July 2024, after Biden had withdrawn from the presidential race, Dr. O’Connor reiterated that Biden’s condition remained “excellent” when approached by the New York Post.
Allegations that Biden’s circle deliberately hid medical issues—claims made in Tapper and Axios journalist Alex Thompson’s book Original Sin—were denied by Biden’s spokesperson.
“Yes, there were physical changes as he got older, but evidence of aging is not evidence of mental incapacity,” the spokesperson said.
