House Speaker Kevin McCarthy was hosted by Rabbi Moshe Margereten of Tzedek on Wednesday, with the pair discussing various topics and issues, most notably groundbreaking legislation to combat infertility. Speaker McCarthy made the stop as he was in the area to attend a fundraiser for Congressman Marc Molinaro. Also in attendance were DA Brian Conaty, as well as JCC of Sullivan County representatives Sender Portugal, Mattis Rutner and Abe Rosenberg. The productive meeting took place in Monticello, New York, with Rabbi Margereten outlining the importance of legislation that would force private health insurance companies to pay for infertility treatments – as health insurance companies do across the West.

Thousands of Bnei Torah gathered at Yeshiva Chaim Berlin in Flatbush on Thursday, to give Kavod Acharon to the Rosh Yeshiva, Hagaon HaRav Aharon Schecter ZT”L, who was Niftar early this morning at the age of 95. Only a few Hespeidim were given, which included the new Rosh Yeshiva of Chaim Berlin, Hagaon HaRav Shlomo Haliwa, who is the son in law of the Rosh Yeshiva ZT”L. This past Tuesday, the annual Flatbush Hatzolah vs NYPD baseball game was held in Brooklyn at Maimonides Park. The game went into extra innings. At the end, Hatzolah won the NYPD 12-11 in the 13th inning. Flatbush Hatzolah has been playing weekly summer baseball games against various NYC agencies – such as NYPD and FDNY to foster a spirit of camaraderie and friendship. These ball games have successfully enhanced the unique relationship between the various agencies and Hatzoloh, and gives all a chance to “get out of the work uniform” and further enhance the important partnerships and understanding that the community can really count on. While always competitive, the games have been enjoyed by all.

As previous reported on YWN, the famed Mirrer Mashgiach, HaRav Binyamin “Hatzadik” Finkel Shlit”a is on a short but impactful chizzuk trip to the United States. The Mashgiach arrived on Monday, and will be departing back to Eretz Yisroel this coming Monday. The mashgiach is dedicating the majority of his time in the US to the Lakewood kehilla, where he had been speaking in various yeshivos, chadarim, and shuls. On Shabbos, the Deal community will have the zchus of hosting him. In just the past two days, the mashgiach has delivered dozens of Shiurim and Mussar Shmuessen, and visited many yeshivas, Chadarim and attended community events. Thousands have flocked to these events to hear his incredible words of Chizzuk and to hopefully receive a personal bracha from the Tzadik.

Thursday, Gimmel Tammuz 5783 Year of Hakhel (June 22, 2023), marks the 29th yahrtzeit of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, HaRav Menachem Mendel Schneerson זי”ע. The days surrounding the Yartheit, 3 Tammuz on the Hebrew calendar, are being marked by people in every corner of the world who have been touched by the Rebbe’s love, his profound teachings and by the 6,000 Shluchim couples he sent to invigorate and revitalize Jewish life in more than 100 countries and thousands of cities. Communities are holding gatherings and farbrengens on or close to the date, and 50,000 people are expected to visit the Ohel, the Rebbe’s resting place in Queens, N.Y., in the days leading up to and on the third of Tammuz.

This past Monday evening, representatives from several cities around the Midwest convened in Cleveland Ohio for the annual MALL (Midwest Agudah Lay Leadership) conference. For ten years now, the Agudah of Illinois has facilitated the MALL group to maintain communication amongst the cities as they address the various challenges they faced and share ideas and projects that have seen success. Besides for the relationships and support, many conferences have resulted in tangible takeaways including a new Agudah office in one city, and multiple service organizations opening around the Midwest.

The FDNY and Flatbush Hatzolah are at the scene of a second-alarm home fire on Avenue I and E. 23rd Street. The fire began at around 10:40 pm, and Hatzolah has treated at least one in unknown condition. Due to the intensity of the flames, all FDNY firefighters have been ordered out of the structure, over fears that it could collapse.
