YWN regrets to inform you of the Petira of Hagaon HaRav Zalman Nechemiya Goldberg ZT”L (88), son-in-law of HaRav Shlomo Zalman Auerbach, and a major Posek in Eretz Yisroel. Rav Goldberg was the editor in chief of the Encyclopedia HaTalmudis and was the Rosh Kollel of Sadigurah – Yeshiva Daas Moshe. He was also a Dayan on the “Bais Din Hagadol”. Rav Goldberg was Niftar on Thursday at Hadassah Ein Kerem Medical Center in Jerusalem after suffering a stroke with brain hemorrhaging last week. YWN regrets to inform you of the Petira of Hagaon HaRav Chaim Dov Keller ZATZAL, the Rosh Yeshiva of Telshe Chicago. He was 90 years old. The Rosh Yeshiva had been on a ventilator after contacting COVID-19 in March, and unfortunately never recovered. As one of the senior roshei yeshiva in the United States, Rav Keller served as a member of the Nesius of Agudas Yisroel of America. Rav Keller was born in New York City and attended the Telshe Yeshiva after it was established in Cleveland, Ohio in 1940 by HaRav Chaim Mordechai Katz and HaRav Eliyahu Meir Bloch. Rav Keller became a student and disciple of Rav Bloch in particular.

The Shomrei Emunim Rebbe, HaRav Raphael Aharon Roth, z’tl, was Niftar on Thursday morning of the coronavirus at Laniado Hospital in Netanya at the age of 73. The Rebbe was taken to the hospital before Tisha B’Av after suffering from breathing difficulties due to COVID-19. Since then the Rebbe has been sedated and ventilated and Klal Yisrael has been davening for his recovery. His condition deteriorated further three days ago and his battle for his life ended on Thursday morning. The Rebbe was born to the previous Rebbe, HaRav Avraham Chaim Roth, the Ba’al Chukei Chaim and was the grandson of the Ba’al Shomer Emunim, HaRav Aharon Roth, Reb Are’leh, whose name he bore.

A tragedy occurred in Jerusalem on Motzei Shabbos, when a 17-year-old yeshivah bochur from Ramot was hit by a car and killed while riding his bike near his home. Shmuel Aharon Glik, z’l, a resident of Ramot Aleph and a talmid of Yeshivas Ateres Shlomo in Rishon L’Tzion, was hit by a car as he was riding his bike on Rechov Sulam Yaakov. Emergency medical responders arrived at the scene and found that Shmuel, z’l, had suffered a multi-system injury and wasn’t breathing and had no pulse. The EMTs evacuated him to Shaarei Tzedek Hospital while attempting to resuscitate him but unfortunately his death was pronounced upon arrival to the hospital. Shmuel is the son of R’ Chaim Zevulun and Naama Glick. Naama is a nurse in Shaarei Tzedek and was on duty when the accident occurred.

YWN regrets to inform you of the Petira of HaRav Adin Even-Israel Steinsaltz ZT”L. He was 83. Rav Steinsaltz had been hospitalized with a lung infection and his condition deteriorated until his passing early Friday morning. The kevura was held on Har HaZeisim. Rabbi Steinsaltz served as the president of Yeshivat Makor Chaim and Yeshivat Tekoa. He has written an easy to understand explanation of the Gemara as well as a host of other sefarim. His lifelong work in Jewish education earned him the Israel Prize, the highest honor in the State of Israel. In all, Rabbi Steinsaltz authored over 60 books and hundreds of articles on a multitude of subjects. Born in Jerusalem in 1937 to secular parents, Rabbi Steinsaltz studied physics and chemistry at the Hebrew University.

Norman Rosenbaum, a Melbourne based lawyer who became well-known in the US for his battle for justice following his brother Yankel’s murder in the Crown Heights riots, passed away on Shabbos at the age of 63, Collive reported. Yankee Rosenbaum, a 29-year-old yeshivah student, was stabbed to death by 30 African-American men in 1991 in the Crown Heights riots, triggered by a car accident that killed one African-American child, Gavin Cato, and severely injured another. Lemrick Nelson Jr., 16, was charged with Rosenbaum’s murder but was acquitted at a trial the following year. Norman Rosenbaum began traveling to New York on a regular basis, staying months at a time, in a campaign for justice for his brother’s murder.

Rav Shmuel Ashkenazi, z’l, a resident of Jerusalem known as the “ish sefarim” due to his decades-long habit of buying a new sefer every day from the time of his wedding passed away on Shabbos at the age of 98, Kikar Shabbos reported. A relative of the niftar told Kikar H’Shabbos that during the first few months of the coronavirus pandemic, Rav Ashkenazi eagerly awaited the moment he would be able to daven in shul once again. When shuls were finally reopened, Rav Ashkenazi returned to shul, thinking he would be safe since anyone with the coronavirus wouldn’t attend. “But a murderer awaited him there!” his relative said.

YWN regrets to inform you of the Petira of Rebbitzen Reichel Berenbaum A”H, the wife of Hagaon HaRav Shmuel Berenbaum ZATZAL, the late Mirrer Rosh Yeshiva. Rebbitzen Berenbaum was sick for the past 2 months, and was Niftar while being treated in Lakewood. The Rebbitzen was an incredible woman, who devoted her entire life to the Mirrer Yeshiva, standing by her husband, as he was Marbitz Torah to thousands of his Talmidim over the decades. She spent her years working in the Yeshiva office, making sure the Yeshiva functioned in all aspects.

YWN regrets to inform you of the Petira of the Sanzer Rebbe, HaRav Naftali Halberstam ZATZAL. He was 96, and likely the oldest Rebbe in the world. He was Niftar on Friday night. The Niftar got sick with COVID-19 during the peak of infection in New York (around Pesach time), and was placed on a respirator, where he remained until his Petira today.
