Rebbitzen Rivka Kahaneman, a’h, the almanah of Hagaon HaRav Avraham Kahaneman, z’tl, the Nasi of Yeshivas Ponezezh, was niftar in Ma’anyei Hayeshua Hospital on Sunday at the age of 99. The Rebbitzen was born in Germany in 1921 to Rav Eliezer Knoller, z’tl, the Rosh Kahal of the Jewish community in Berlin, and his wife Chava, a’h. The family’s illustrious forebears include the Rambam, the Maharal, the Chavas Yair, and the Levush. The Rebbitzen moved from place to place in France during the Holocaust, where she managed to refrain from eating non-kosher food with great mesirus nefesh. After the war, the Rebbitzen was involved in Hatzalah work in Poland and other countries. Later, she moved to Eretz Yisrael, where she became a teacher for girls who survived the Holocaust.

R’ Pinchas Eliyahu Waldstein, z’l, of the southern Israeli town of Yerucham, passed away of the coronavirus on erev Shabbos at the age of 35. R’ Waldstein, who had no pre-existing medical conditions, contracted the coronavirus almost two months ago and was hospitalized in Soroka Hospital in Be’er Sheva. His condition deteriorated and he was sedated and attached to a respirator. Later, as his condition continued to deteriorate, he was also hooked up to an ECMO machine. R’ Waldstein was a respected avreich and an active and beloved member of the Chareidi community in Yerucham. At the beginning of the outbreak of the coronavirus, he opened a yeshivah in Yerucham for Sefardi yeshiva bochurim. “It was all his initiative,” one of the community members told B’Chadrei Chareidim.

Her children are Chayale, Tzpori, Rivky, Tova, Avigayil, Batsheva, Miriam and her son, Yossie. She was the daughter of HaRav Yeshaya Siff, the well-known Rov in the Lower East Side. A tragedy that began 10 days ago got worse as Dr. Shirley Almassi Ariel A”H, the 34-year-old bride who collapsed at her own wedding after she suffered a cardiac arrest, was Niftar in Soroka hospital on Wednesday. Ariel, a renowned pediatrician, was brought to Soroka hospital last week as EMS crews fought to save her life. Doctors at the hospital tried to revive her and managed to stabilize her enough to keep her alive for the next ten days. “First responders brought Shirley to Soroka hospital while conducting CPR on her. Our trauma team continued the CPR and Shirley was brought to the pulmonary surgical intensive care unit in extremely critical condition. Numerous doctors were guests at the wedding that was held in a private home.

HaRav Benaya Nebenzahl, z’tl, the son of the former Rav of the Old City, Hagaon HaRav Avigdor Nebenzahl, שליט”א, passed away of the coronavirus on Tuesday evening at the age of 57. HaRav Nebenzahl, who was one of the Roshei Yeshivah of the Chayei Moshe Yeshivah, contracted the coronavirus over two months ago despite the fact that he was extremely adherent health regulations, not even leaving home for a period of time. Following a deterioration in his condition, he was hospitalized six weeks ago at Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital, where he eventually passed away.

A 40-year-old Chareidi woman from Netivot was killed in a devastating car accident shortly after midnight on Motzei Shabbos. The woman’s husband and teenaged daughter were moderately injured in the accident and the driver of the other vehicle, a Chareidi man in his 60s, was seriously injured. The head-on collision near Netivot occurred between a commercial vehicle and a private car on Highway 293 near Netivot. When emergency responders arrived, they were forced to declare the mother’s death at the scene of the accident. The nifteres was later identifed as Tamar Sheetrit, a’h, 40, a mother of three. She was known in her community as a ba’ales chessed who held weddings in her home for needy couples.

Reb Naftali Biller, z’l, originally of the US, passed away of the coronavirus on Shabbos at the age of 39 in Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital in Jerusalem. Reb Naftali, a Slonimer chassid, was born and raised in the US. to Reb Dovid Tzvi and Rivka Biller, who tragically already lost a son two years ago in a car accident in the Catskills – Reb Reuven Chaim Biller, z’l, who passed away at the age of 42, leaving behind ten children. After Reb Naftali’s marriage to a Bnei Brak resident, he settled in Ashdod and later in Bnei Brak. Reb Naftali contracted the coronavirus about two months ago. Although he recovered from the virus, he suffered complications and his immune system was apparently weakened.

Reb Naftali Tzvi Nirenberger, z’l, of Modiin Illit passed away of the coronavirus at the end of last week at the age of 65. R’ Nirenberg was the first COVID-19 fatality in Modiin Illit which is currently designated as a “red city,” due to its high coronavirus infection rate relative to its population. Sadly, the niftar was survived only by his wife since he was childless. Another Modiin Illit resident is currently critically ill with the coronavirus.
