The head of the United Nations’ nuclear monitoring body said Monday that nearly all of the approximately 15,000 centrifuges operating at Iran’s Natanz enrichment facility were likely rendered inoperable due to an Israeli strike that triggered a major power outage.
Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), had initially suggested that the attack on the external power systems of Natanz might have affected its centrifuges, though the structure housing them appeared untouched. Speaking to the BBC, he offered a much more definitive assessment.
“Our assessment is that with this sudden loss of external power, in great probability the centrifuges have been severely damaged if not destroyed altogether,” Grossi told the BBC.

Multiple blasts and a barrage of anti-aircraft fire were reported in Tehran on Tuesday, according to Iranian state-affiliated media.
Eyewitnesses speaking to Iran International, a media outlet operated by Iranian dissidents, described hearing explosions in the eastern and southeastern sections of the capital.
The same outlet also posted on X that individuals in Ahvaz, a city in the Khuzestan province of southwestern Iran, had reported hearing a series of detonations.
Meanwhile, Iran’s Asriran news platform stated that air defense systems were activated at the Natanz nuclear facility amid the unfolding situation.

President Trump issued a stark warning late Monday, urging all residents of Tehran to leave the city without delay. In a post on Truth Social, he also condemned Iran’s refusal to agree to a nuclear deal he had previously proposed.
“Iran should have signed the ‘deal’ I told them to sign. What a shame, and waste of human life. Simply stated, IRAN CAN NOT HAVE A NUCLEAR WEAPON. I said it over and over again! Everyone should immediately evacuate Tehran!” Trump wrote in the post.
Earlier that same day, Israeli authorities had also advised those in Tehran to evacuate, signaling that additional strikes on Iranian targets were imminent as the military confrontation between the two nations escalated further.
