Charles Kushner was officially confirmed on Monday by the Senate to become the next U.S. Ambassador to France and Monaco. The decision, which passed by a margin of 51 to 45, included support from both sides of the aisle. Notably, Senator Cory Booker of New Jersey backed the appointment, while Senator Lisa Murkowski of Alaska voted against it, according to The Hill.
Kushner’s selection has ignited debate, primarily due to his controversial criminal history. Approximately 20 years ago, he pleaded guilty to a series of offenses, including filing false tax returns, making false statements to the Federal Election Commission, and witness tampering in a federal case.
