The Assembly passed the same bill in April; it now goes to Governor Kathy Hochul for signature. The bill would allow physicians, at the request of patients, to write prescriptions for lethal drugs for patients who are believed by two physicians as having less than six months left to live. California has launched a legal battle against President Trump over his recent decision to place the state’s National Guard under federal control. The lawsuit, filed Monday, seeks to overturn the administration’s actions following unrest in Los Angeles related to protests against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Governor Gavin Newsom, along with Attorney General Rob Bonta, contends that Trump violated the U.S. Constitution by invoking a statute designed to be used only in cases of “invasion” or “rebellion.” They argue that such a classification does not apply to the current circumstances and represents a misuse of executive power.
