Yerushalayim remains the most populous city in Israel, with a total of 1,046,300 residents, according to new statistics released by the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) ahead of the upcoming Yom Yerushalayim celebrations. The report notes that approximately one out of every ten Israelis lives in the capital.
Jews account for 57% of the city’s population, while Arabs make up 38%. The data from 2023 reveals that within the Jewish population, 51% are identified as part of the chareidi community.
In 2024, Yerushalayim saw an increase of 17,900 people in its population, primarily due to a high birth rate. That year, around 1,500 individuals relocated to the capital. However, more people left the city than moved in. Most of those who did choose to settle in Yerushalayim came from other chareidi population centers.
Yerushalayim continues to stand out demographically for its youthful population. Children aged 14 and under make up 31.7% of the city’s residents. In contrast, only 18.9% of Haifa’s population and 18.2% of Tel Aviv’s are in that age group. Meanwhile, the elderly make up a much smaller portion of Yerushalayim’s residents: just 9.5% are 65 or older, compared to 20.7% in Haifa and 15.6% in Tel Aviv.
In total, 25,680 babies were born in Yerushalayim during 2024. Of those births, 66% were to Jewish families and 34% to Arab families. Newborns from Yerushalayim represented 14% of all births across the country.
