“Abba isn’t waking up!” are not exactly the most common words for a bochur to wake up to on a Shabbos morning at home. But unfortunately for Yechiel Zlotnick, that is exactly what he heard.

Yechiel was young, and he was in his prime. His learning was better than ever, he was halfway finished with his degree, and he was recently engaged to Binah, the most wonderful girl in the world. The wedding was set for Adar, and Yechiel and his kallah were busy with the preparations.

But on that fateful Shabbos, all his dreams came crashing down.

“Calculated risk:” It’s a phrase we’re all familiar with in 2020. In making their daily plans, each individual in the world has weighed needs and normalcy against the likelihood that they could catch the coronavirus. On top of that likelihood they have considered their own health, and how they can expect to be affected by the virus. Through this ever-changing moral dilemma families all over have set their own personal standard of ‘careful.’ Rabbi Tzvi Wallis’s standard was far beyond that of almost anyone.

For many of us at The Siyum, nothing captures the mixture of feelings and emotions more than the dancing. This new song, When We All Danced Together, is performed by Baruch Levine, R’ Shloime Taussig, R’ Abish Brodt and Uri Davidi, Shmuli Rosenberg, CEO of fwd/NYC and CMO of The Siyum. We had the opportunity to talk to Shmuli about this song, and learned so much about The Siyum.

Malka Sontag couldn’t help but let out a grunt of exertion as she lifted Aliza Birnbaum out of bed. It was time to help Aliza with her daily walk up and down the hospital corridors.

“Malka, motek, you are young! Why are you sighing? You’re not an old Savta like me, not yet!” chuckled Aliza with a raspy voice and a wrinkly wink.

Aliza smiled back goodheartedly. She held Aliza’s hand on her walk, bearing her weight most of the way and lifting her back into bed when they were done. But after they said their mutual goodbyes, Malka began to reflect on her own life.

“I was in shidduchim for years after my mother passed away from cancer. Now I am finally getting married, but I have no parents to help pay for my upcoming wedding.”

“I am a kallah, orphaned from my parents. I am engaged, but I am in essence alone. I have noone in the world.”

Basya Friedman used to live a normal life. That was before her father started hearing voices.

Basya was always very close with her “Tatte’le”. They would sing beautifully harmonized zemiros together on Shabbos and take long walks together every afternoon. But right before her brother’s Bar Mitzvah, Basya’s father started acting strange.

That’s when things started to become frightening.

“He was afraid of the world, afraid to speak to anyone. He began to see and hear things that were not there. It breaks my heart in two to see our Tatty, who was once such a strong and happy man, become so sick,“ writes the heartbroken daughter. “Now he is unable to function.”
