Rep. Steve Scalise, the No. 2 Republican in the House, was ready to play ball for the GOP two years after a shooting at a congressional baseball practice nearly killed him.
On June 14, 2017, a lone gunman shot multiple people– including Scalise– at Eugene Simpson Stadium Park in Alexandria, Va. Republican lawmakers were practicing for their upcoming charity baseball game against Democrats.
Scalise, 53, still undergoes physical therapy and walks with a cane after one of the bullets struck his hip and told reporters: “There were many miracles that day. I am lucky to be alive.”
There were no miracles on the baseball field for his team last night, however. The GOP lost to the Democrat team 14-7.

Israeli defense electronics company Elbit Systems announced on Wednesday that its U.S. subsidiary has been awarded a $26 million contract by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection to install a multi-sensor system to monitor the U.S.-Mexico border.
According to a report in the Israeli financial daily Globes, Elbit will install an Integrated Fixed Towers (IFT) system in Arizona.
Elbit has been involved in a number of projects with U.S. Customs regarding border security.
The IFT system is a command and control center with sensors that monitors the U.S.-Mexico border and provides intelligence to agents patrolling on the ground.

President Donald Trump’s initial reaction to the first 2020 Democratic presidential debate: “BORING!”
The presidential tweet landed as candidates on the debate stage in Miami were asked about the crisis at the southern U.S. border involving migrant children.
Shortly after, he tweeted criticism of NBC and MSNBC over a technical production issue that occurred in the second hour of the debate when moderators Rachel Maddow and Chuck Todd began asking questions.
The tweets came minutes after Trump, who had deplaned from Air Force One in Alaska en route to Japan, greeting the U.S. troops there, later sharing a video montage of his brief visit in Anchorage on Twitter.

The National Security Agency purged millions of Americans’ phone records after learning that some of the data was collected in error last fall as part of a controversial counterterrorism program, according to documents made public Wednesday.
It was the second such instance last year of “over-collection” and helped lead to the agency’s decision – which it still has not publicly acknowledged – to shutter the program earlier this year, according to people familiar with the matter who spoke on the condition of anonymity to be candid.
The law authorizing this data collection, a scaled-down version of a program first disclosed by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden, is due to expire in December.

A fundraising conference held by the U.N. Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) on Tuesday raised over $110 million from 35 countries, enough to allow the refugee agency, which has been struggling since the Trump administration cut its funding last year, to stave off an immediate budget crisis.
According to UNRWA chief Pierre Kraehenbuehl, however, the organization will need to seek more funding in September to cover its $1.2 billion annual budget.
The largest donations came from the European Union, Germany and Britain.
In 2018, the Trump administration withdrew funding from UNRWA, saying the organization was ineffective and even detrimental to Palestinians, perpetuating a culture of victimhood and running schools which promote hatred of Jews.
